Epilepsy is a central nervous system(neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. Anyone can develop epilepsy. Epilepsy affects both males and females of all races, ethnic backgrounds and ages. It may occur due to genetic disorder or an acquired brain injury, such as a trauma or stroke.

The general symptoms of epilepsy are temporary confusion, a staring spell, uncontrollable jerking movements of arms and legs, loss of consciousness and awareness, psychic symptoms such as fear, anxiety or déjà vu.

The different types of seizures of epilepsy are as follows:

  • Focal seizures without loss of consciousness
  • Focal seizure with impaired awareness
  • Absence seizure
  • Tonic seizure
  • Atonic seizure
  • Clonic seizure
  • Myoclonic seizure
  • Tonic-clonic seizure

Epilepsy has no identifiable cause in about half the people with the condition. In the other half, the condition may be traced to various factors, including: Genetic Influence, Head Trauma, Brain Conditions, Infectious Diseases, Prenatal Injury and Developmental Disorders.

Certain factors may increase your risk of epilepsy, they are: Age, Family History, Head injuries, Stroke and other Vascular diseases, Dementia, Brain infections, Seizures in childhood.

Having a seizure at certain times can lead to circumstances that are dangerous to yourself and others like falling, drowning, car accidents, pregnancy complications, emotional health issues, as well as life threatening complications like status epilepticus and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).

Medications like that of nerve pain, sedatives and anticonvulsants are used for the treatment of epilepsy.
