Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movements. Symptoms start gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. Tremors are common, but the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement.

In the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, your face may show little or no expression. Your arms may not swing when you walk. Your speech may become soft or slurred. Parkinson’s disease symptoms worsen as your condition progresses over time.

Nerve cell damage in the brain causes dopamine levels to drop, leading to symptoms of Parkinson’s. There are more than 1 million cases per year in India.

The signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may include: Tremor, slowed movement (Bradykinesia), Rigid muscles, Impaired posture and balance, Loss of automatic movements, Speech Changes, Writing Changes.

In Parkinson’s disease, certain nerve cells(neurons) in the brain gradually break down or die. Many of the symptoms are due to a loss of the neurons that produces a chemical messenger in your brain called dopamine. When dopamine levels decrease, it causes abnormal brain activity, leading to impaired movements and other symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The exact causes are unknown, but the several factors that play a role are: Genes, Environmental Triggers, the presence of Lewy bodies in the brain, Alpha-synuclein found within Lewy bodies.

Parkinson’s disease is often accompanied by these additional problems, which may be treatable: Thinking difficulties, Depression and emotional changes, swallowing problems, Chewing and Eating problems, sleep disorders, bladder problems, constipation and so on.

Medications like Dopamine promoter, Antidepressant, Cognition-enhancing medication, Anti-Tremor; and physical exercises can regulate Parkinson’s disease within a limit not causing hindrance to regular life.
